Mixed numbers and improper fractions
A mixed number consists of a whole part and a proper fraction, e.g. 3 16.
An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator, e.g. 196. Any mixed number can be written as one.
How to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction
Multiply the whole part by the denominator, then add the numerator. The denominator stays the same:
i nd = i · d + nd
Example 1. Convert 5 3/4
- Multiply whole part by denominator: 5 × 4 = 20
- Add numerator: 20 + 3 = 23
- Keep the denominator: 23/4

Example 2. Convert 2 1/3
- Multiply whole part by denominator: 2 × 3 = 6
- Add numerator: 6 + 1 = 7
- Keep the denominator: 7/3
